Facebook Confirms Testing ‘Call’ Button for Online Video Chats

Facebook is reminding users how to make video calls via the social network by testing a “Call” button on member Timeline pages.

The button, which was first spotted by TechCrunch, is located next to the “Message” option on Facebook Timeline’s layout. The “Chat” button would replace the subtle video-camera icon now used to start an online video chat.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the button is only a test, so it’s unknown at this time if it will become a permanent part of Timeline. In the meantime, some members using a desktop version of Facebook will be able to test the feature.

Although Facebook partnered with popular online chat service Skype nearly a year ago, the social network hasn’t made the option overly visible on the site. Now with the increase in popularity of social chat services such as Google Hangouts and Airtime — which was launched by former Facebook president Sean Parker — it looks like Facebook is ready to get the service more on its users’ radar.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has played with the concept of a “Call” button. It was featured on the previous version of profile pages, but it was hard to find in the settings drop-down menu.

Nokia's 41-megapixel PureView 808 debuts in India for Rs. 33,899

After a long wait, Nokia has finally announced its camera phone PureView 808 today in India. It has been priced at Rs. 33,899 (Best Buy) and will reach the market starting today.

Announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress, Nokia revealed the smartphone at a press event in New Delhi.

With its 41 megapixel camera, the PureView is ready to revolutionise smartphone imaging in the country. The camera captures image data form seven adjacent pixels and collapses them into one, resulting in a 5 megapixel image of crystal clear quality. It includes Carl Zeiss optics, and a dual flash (Xenon and LED).

Video recording is no setback either, with the option of recording full HD 1080p at 30fps, not to mention zoom up to 6x. The smartphone also offers 5.1 channel Dolby Digital surround sound.

In terms of technical details and specifications, The PureView has a single-core 1.3 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. It runs a Symbian Belle operating system and comes with a 4-inch AMOLED display with 640x360 resolution and curved Gorilla Glass. The phone also features NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB on the go and 16 GB of on-board storage.

Windows 8: How the child safety

Tethering with iPad - if your rate is true

Windows 8: Enable the hidden Administrator

Samsung goes against Apple in the next round - now with the Galaxy SIII focus

How to Skip Metro and go right to the Windows 8 Desktop

If you need to work with the Windows 8 operating system but do not like the new Metro interface at all, you might prefer if your PC would skip right past Metro to display the good old desktop to you. At least for now, that is in the Release Preview, you can still get the start menu back in the interface so that you theoretically do not really need to switch back to Metro at all.

What you basically need to do is create a special shortcut and run it on system start. You can alternatively move desktop applications like Google Chrome into the autostart. In either way, Windows 8 will skip Metro and load the desktop automatically. Please note that you may still see Metro for a moment before you see the desktop. What you save by this is a single-click with the mouse on the Desktop Metro tile.

Creating the shortcut

Create a blank plain text file in Windows, for instance by right-clicking the desktop and selecting New > Text Document, and fill it with the following lines:

Now you need to save the file, and rename it to start.scf (you can select a different name, but the extension needs to be .scf).

Robert recommends to load the file using Windows’s Task Scheduler, and here is a quick rundown on how you’d do that:

• It may be a bit ironic but the fastest way is to hit the windows key, enter schedule, filter by Settings on the right, and hit enter.. This opens the Task Scheduler on the desktop.
• Click on Task Scheduler Library, then right-click the task list in the upper-middle pane and select Create New Task from the context menu.
• Enter a descriptive name for the task and click on the Triggers tab afterwards.
• Click on the New button and select At log on next to Begin the task at the top of the new trigger window. Click OK afterwards.
• Switch to the Actions tab and select New. Now click on browse and pick the start.scf file that you have just created. Click ok when you have done that.
• If you are working on a desktop PC click on ok to complete the process. Laptop users may want to click on the Conditions tab before that to uncheck the “Start the task only if the computer is on AC power” box there so that you are taken to the desktop when the laptop runs on battery.

Instead of using the task scheduler, you could also move the file into the system’s autostart folder. You first need to enable the display of hidden folders before you can access the folder in Windows Explorer though:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

And that’s how you switch right to the desktop. Depending on your system, this may be happening pretty fast after logon, or to slow to really make a difference. via[ghacks]

How to Backup and Move Firefox Bookmarks to another Computer

Looking back at all the tutorials that I wrote about Firefox in the last six years or so, I noticed that I never ran a piece on how to backup and move Firefox bookmarks to another computer. While I published tutorials on how to restore bookmarks in Firefox on the same computer, how to use backup tools like FeBe or Mozbackup, or use Firefox Sync to synchronize the bookmarks and other data to another computer running Firefox, I never explained how you can do that manually and without additional tools.

I personally think it is always good to know how to do things manually, but if you are just looking for a quick way to backup your bookmarks, or move them to another computer, I suggest you use one of the tools mentioned above for that purpose.

Backing up Firefox Bookmarks manually

Open the Firefox web browser and press Ctrl-Shift-b at the same time to bring up the bookmark’s manager and library. You can alternatively click on the Firefox button at the top and click on the Bookmarks link there to open the page instead.

Locate the Import and Backup link in the menubar at the top and click on it. There you find options to backup bookmarks, and to export bookmarks to HTML. Let me explain the difference quickly: if you select export, you save the bookmarks file in JSON format, which Firefox can read, but you can’t really do anything with on its own. While you can open it in a text editor and look at it, the format is not really something that you can work with.

The export to HTML feature on the other hand exports all bookmarks into HTML format which you can load in any browser to work with your bookmarks. You can for instance put them somewhere on the Internet to access them remotely this way, or use them as a local backup of sorts that you can use. It can also be imported without overwriting the existing bookmarks on the second PC.

Firefox can restore and backup both bookmark formats. If you are unsure what to select, pick the backup to Json format.

Moving Firefox Bookmarks to another Computer

The biggest obstacle now is to get the backed up bookmarks file to the other computer system. If they are connected in a local area network, you may be able to simply access the backup files, or move them to a shared folder or drive to access them on the second computer.

You may alternatively use a cloud hosting service like Dropbox or SkyDrive, send them to an email account that you can access on your other machine, or copy it on a USB flash drive to move it to the new computer this way.

Once you have the file on the other computer, you repeat the steps but select Restore or Import Bookmarks from HTML – depending on what you have selected during backup – to restore the bookmarks again.

Note that all existing bookmarks on the computer will be erased when you restore the file from the backup.

When you select Restore, pick the Choose File link from the context menu, browse to the backed up file and select it. This restores all bookmarks in this version of the Firefox browser. Remember that if you have bookmarks stored on the second computer that you do not want to lose, select the export to bookmarks HTML file and import that back.via[ghacks]

Windows Security Emergency Patch to fix Flame loophole

You have probably heard about Flame, or Flamer, by now, a highly sophisticated and targeted malware that ran undetected for more than a year before it was discovered by security experts. As of now, many security vendors have updated their programs and tools to detect the malware, and we have shown you how you can scan your system for Flame to remove the malware if it is indeed installed on it.

A Microsoft analysis of the malware discovered that “some components of the malware have been signed by certificates that allow software to appear as if it was produced by Microsoft”, and while Flame itself should not be an issue anymore for the majority of users, other malware that uses a more widespread approach could use the loophole to exploit Windows PCs.

According to Microsoft, the developers of Flame exploited “an older cryptography algorithm” to sign code as “if it originated from Microsoft”.  The Terminal Server Licensing Server which allowed customers to authorize remote desktop services, used that algorithm.

Microsoft therefor has released an update that is available on Windows Update and on the Microsoft Support website.

The update is available for all recent 32-bit and 64-bit client and server editions of Windows, from Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 all the way to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. It has been released with an important rating, at least for 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Users are nevertheless asked to install the patch as soon as possible on their system. A restart is not required.

Microsoft in addition has changed the certificate issuing of the Terminal Server Licensing Service which can no longer issue certificates that allow code to be signed.

How to Speed Up a slow loading WebSite

I think we have all be in a situation where a website or web page that you are dying to access is not responding at all, or only slowly that it almost becomes unbearable to wait. But there are things that you can do that may speed up the loading of the web pages you are interested in, and some may even help you if a website is down or unavailable in your location.

Keep in mind though that you can’t go faster than the maximum speed of your Internet connection. If that is already maxed out, for instance by a download in the background, you may need to temporarily pause those activities to access the sites you are interested in.

Lets take a look at some of the options that you have to speed up access to a website that you want to load in your browser.

1. Browser Tools

Sometimes, a website loads slow because of items that it loads that are not really relevant to the actual contents that you want to access. This can be advertisements, widgets that load information from other websites, or a photo gallery that is displayed on every page of the website. The following browser tools can improve the loading time in various ways if that is the case.

• Adblocking – If advertisements are the culprit, you may want to consider blocking ads on the website to speed it up. Adblock Plus is available for Google Chrome and Firefox, and you can use it to block ads automatically or only on select websites. Opera users can try the Opera AdBlock add-on, and Internet Explorer the Simple Adblock plugin.
• Scripts – Sometimes scripts that are not ads are the culprit. Many ad blockers miss those, and while you may have options to add them manually to the blocker’s blacklist, a tool likeNoScript may be the better solution since it is automatically blocking all scripts that a website tries to load.

• Caching – If a website is not available at that moment in time, you may want to try loading a cached version of it. While you can do that manually as well, you can make use of browser extensions such as CacheIt for the Firefox web browser or Passive Cache for Chrome to improve the process.
• Proxies -  A website may sometimes be available only to users in select countries, for instance if the site operators have configured it to block requests from certain locations in the world. Other reasons may be that a country or ISP is blocking access to a site, or if a regional Internet hub is currently experiencing issues. Proxies may aid in this case to circumvent the issue. You will find add-ons for individual proxy services, and extensions that let you configure and switch proxy servers more easily in the browser. Among the options are Proxy Switchy for Google Chrome or FoxyProxy for Firefox.
• Opera Turbo – Opera Turbo combines a proxy server with a server that is compressing the Internet traffic to speed things up. It is an excellent option for user on slow Internet connections.

2. Browser Settings

Sometimes all you need to do is make changes to certain browser settings to speed things up. Lets take a look at some of the options:

• Disable – You can disable various items, like the loading of images or JavaScript in your browser. This alone can be enough to speed up the loading of a website. You find those settings in your browser’s preferences. Firefox users for instance by clicking Firefox > Options, Chrome users by loading this page in their browser: chrome://chrome/settings/
• Speed Up – Increase the maximum number of connections and various other settings that may improve the time it takes to download all elements of a web page to your local system. Internet Explorer users can use Tweak IE for that, Firefox users FasterFox and Google Chrome users FastestChrome.

3. Services

Services allow you to make use of some of the options that browser extensions offer without installing anything in the browser first. This can be useful in situations where you simply are not allowed to install add-ons to a browser, or where you prefer not to do so.

• Web Proxy – A web proxy can be one of the easiest options to access a slow loading or blocked website. You find a large selection of proxy servers over at Proxy.org which you can try out. Keep in mind though that you direct all traffic through that site, at least in the browser tab that you have opened the proxy in. It is therefor usually not recommended to use proxies to enter financial information or log in to web services.
• Coral CDN – This is a specialized service that you can try to access a cached version of a web page. Just visit the site and enter the web address that you want to load. If the site has been cached, you will see its cached copy on the screen.
• The Wayback Machine – This service is rather limited, but nevertheless worth a try if other options have failed. It basically can display a cached static copy of a web page that you try to access, provided that it has been to that page before and saved it.
• Google Cache – This is probably the most reliable option when it comes to caches. Just search for the web page that you want to visit in Google, hover your mouse over the result, click on the right arrows that appear, and select Cached from the options there.

• Virtual Private Networks – VPNs are great, not only because of the security they add to your connection, but also because they act as a proxy of their own. If a particular website or service is not available in your country, or blocked all the time, you can utilize a VPN to access those contents. There are limited free options available, like Hotspot Shield orTunnelbear, and commercial services that start at a few Dollars a month.
• LoBand – A free service that strips out everything but the pure HTML page, thus improving your connectivity to a website.  Mowser is a comparable service.
• DNS Server – Sometimes DNS servers can be really slow, or even block access to pages on the Internet. You can use a program like DNS Benchmark to test various public providers to see which one is the fastest, or switch to a service like Google DNS or Open DNS right away. via[ghacks]

Pocket TV: Turn your TV into an Android Tablet

If you have followed the E3 gaming expo that is currently taking place you may have noticed that several companies are trying to make entertainment in the living room more interactive. Microsoft for instance wants its Xbox system to become your main entertainment hub that you control with voice, gestures, a standard control pad or your smartphone.

Other companies like Google or Apple try to get into the market as well with Apple TV or Google TV respectively which both aim to improve your user experience.

Pocket TV is a project that is currently being funded on Kickstarter. It started less than seven days ago and has nearly reached its goal of $100K funding with less than $15K to go.

Pocket PC at its core is a small PC system that is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The device gets connected to a TV’s HDMI port and provides then everything that Android 4.0 offers. The system comes with two different remotes, a standard sized IR Remote that ships with regular packages, and an AIR remote that features a keyboard and contains a gyroscopic sensor.

Besides that, it will also be possible to control the PC with smartphones. The developers plan to release apps for Android and iOS to allow that.The device can be connected to any TV as long as it has a HDMI port, and supports display resolutions of up to 1080p.

The USB port is pretty cool as you can use it to connect external devices, a hard drive or wireless keyboard for instance to the Pocket TV.

You are probably most interested in what you can do with the Pocket TV device, and whether it justifies its price tag of $99 for the IR remote version, or $119 for the Air remote version.

You basically can do anything that you can do with an Android phone running Android 4.0. This includes streaming video, listening to music, playing games, reading news on the big screen, interacting on social media sites, standard web browsing and search, or using the device for work related tasks.

You do need a wireless Internet router in range to make use of the majority of features, like downloading new apps from the Google Play store, or many of the devices streaming features.

It needs to be noted that devices like Pocket TV are not as uncommon as one would think. Chinese companies are for instance offering similar devices for about the same price. Once example is this store where a device plus remote retails for $119 Dollars albeit with an A8 processor.
