Facebook Confirms Testing ‘Call’ Button for Online Video Chats

Facebook is reminding users how to make video calls via the social network by testing a “Call” button on member Timeline pages.

The button, which was first spotted by TechCrunch, is located next to the “Message” option on Facebook Timeline’s layout. The “Chat” button would replace the subtle video-camera icon now used to start an online video chat.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that the button is only a test, so it’s unknown at this time if it will become a permanent part of Timeline. In the meantime, some members using a desktop version of Facebook will be able to test the feature.

Although Facebook partnered with popular online chat service Skype nearly a year ago, the social network hasn’t made the option overly visible on the site. Now with the increase in popularity of social chat services such as Google Hangouts and Airtime — which was launched by former Facebook president Sean Parker — it looks like Facebook is ready to get the service more on its users’ radar.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has played with the concept of a “Call” button. It was featured on the previous version of profile pages, but it was hard to find in the settings drop-down menu.

Nokia's 41-megapixel PureView 808 debuts in India for Rs. 33,899

After a long wait, Nokia has finally announced its camera phone PureView 808 today in India. It has been priced at Rs. 33,899 (Best Buy) and will reach the market starting today.

Announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress, Nokia revealed the smartphone at a press event in New Delhi.

With its 41 megapixel camera, the PureView is ready to revolutionise smartphone imaging in the country. The camera captures image data form seven adjacent pixels and collapses them into one, resulting in a 5 megapixel image of crystal clear quality. It includes Carl Zeiss optics, and a dual flash (Xenon and LED).

Video recording is no setback either, with the option of recording full HD 1080p at 30fps, not to mention zoom up to 6x. The smartphone also offers 5.1 channel Dolby Digital surround sound.

In terms of technical details and specifications, The PureView has a single-core 1.3 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. It runs a Symbian Belle operating system and comes with a 4-inch AMOLED display with 640x360 resolution and curved Gorilla Glass. The phone also features NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB on the go and 16 GB of on-board storage.

Windows 8: How the child safety

Tethering with iPad - if your rate is true

Windows 8: Enable the hidden Administrator

Samsung goes against Apple in the next round - now with the Galaxy SIII focus

How to Skip Metro and go right to the Windows 8 Desktop

If you need to work with the Windows 8 operating system but do not like the new Metro interface at all, you might prefer if your PC would skip right past Metro to display the good old desktop to you. At least for now, that is in the Release Preview, you can still get the start menu back in the interface so that you theoretically do not really need to switch back to Metro at all.

What you basically need to do is create a special shortcut and run it on system start. You can alternatively move desktop applications like Google Chrome into the autostart. In either way, Windows 8 will skip Metro and load the desktop automatically. Please note that you may still see Metro for a moment before you see the desktop. What you save by this is a single-click with the mouse on the Desktop Metro tile.

Creating the shortcut

Create a blank plain text file in Windows, for instance by right-clicking the desktop and selecting New > Text Document, and fill it with the following lines:

Now you need to save the file, and rename it to start.scf (you can select a different name, but the extension needs to be .scf).

Robert recommends to load the file using Windows’s Task Scheduler, and here is a quick rundown on how you’d do that:

• It may be a bit ironic but the fastest way is to hit the windows key, enter schedule, filter by Settings on the right, and hit enter.. This opens the Task Scheduler on the desktop.
• Click on Task Scheduler Library, then right-click the task list in the upper-middle pane and select Create New Task from the context menu.
• Enter a descriptive name for the task and click on the Triggers tab afterwards.
• Click on the New button and select At log on next to Begin the task at the top of the new trigger window. Click OK afterwards.
• Switch to the Actions tab and select New. Now click on browse and pick the start.scf file that you have just created. Click ok when you have done that.
• If you are working on a desktop PC click on ok to complete the process. Laptop users may want to click on the Conditions tab before that to uncheck the “Start the task only if the computer is on AC power” box there so that you are taken to the desktop when the laptop runs on battery.

Instead of using the task scheduler, you could also move the file into the system’s autostart folder. You first need to enable the display of hidden folders before you can access the folder in Windows Explorer though:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

And that’s how you switch right to the desktop. Depending on your system, this may be happening pretty fast after logon, or to slow to really make a difference. via[ghacks]

How to Backup and Move Firefox Bookmarks to another Computer

Looking back at all the tutorials that I wrote about Firefox in the last six years or so, I noticed that I never ran a piece on how to backup and move Firefox bookmarks to another computer. While I published tutorials on how to restore bookmarks in Firefox on the same computer, how to use backup tools like FeBe or Mozbackup, or use Firefox Sync to synchronize the bookmarks and other data to another computer running Firefox, I never explained how you can do that manually and without additional tools.

I personally think it is always good to know how to do things manually, but if you are just looking for a quick way to backup your bookmarks, or move them to another computer, I suggest you use one of the tools mentioned above for that purpose.

Backing up Firefox Bookmarks manually

Open the Firefox web browser and press Ctrl-Shift-b at the same time to bring up the bookmark’s manager and library. You can alternatively click on the Firefox button at the top and click on the Bookmarks link there to open the page instead.

Locate the Import and Backup link in the menubar at the top and click on it. There you find options to backup bookmarks, and to export bookmarks to HTML. Let me explain the difference quickly: if you select export, you save the bookmarks file in JSON format, which Firefox can read, but you can’t really do anything with on its own. While you can open it in a text editor and look at it, the format is not really something that you can work with.

The export to HTML feature on the other hand exports all bookmarks into HTML format which you can load in any browser to work with your bookmarks. You can for instance put them somewhere on the Internet to access them remotely this way, or use them as a local backup of sorts that you can use. It can also be imported without overwriting the existing bookmarks on the second PC.

Firefox can restore and backup both bookmark formats. If you are unsure what to select, pick the backup to Json format.

Moving Firefox Bookmarks to another Computer

The biggest obstacle now is to get the backed up bookmarks file to the other computer system. If they are connected in a local area network, you may be able to simply access the backup files, or move them to a shared folder or drive to access them on the second computer.

You may alternatively use a cloud hosting service like Dropbox or SkyDrive, send them to an email account that you can access on your other machine, or copy it on a USB flash drive to move it to the new computer this way.

Once you have the file on the other computer, you repeat the steps but select Restore or Import Bookmarks from HTML – depending on what you have selected during backup – to restore the bookmarks again.

Note that all existing bookmarks on the computer will be erased when you restore the file from the backup.

When you select Restore, pick the Choose File link from the context menu, browse to the backed up file and select it. This restores all bookmarks in this version of the Firefox browser. Remember that if you have bookmarks stored on the second computer that you do not want to lose, select the export to bookmarks HTML file and import that back.via[ghacks]
